Hannah’s prayer for a baby is a tender portrait of what many women experience. Praying to God for one’s baby is a sometimes hard thing to do. I, Alexis, found myself praying for my baby’s life last summer, 2017, when the doctors gave her no chance of survival. You can read the miraculous story here: Lucy’s story. Whether your newborn baby had a difficult time getting here or not, the result of the baby’s life is because of God.

The purity of a newborn baby is astonishing. Their innocence is a reminder of the way we were all meant to be when first created by God originally. A baby reminds us of what it looks like to be pure in heart, a virtue Jesus held in high value.

Just as you cannot understand the path of the wind or the mystery of a tiny baby growing in its mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the activity of God, who does all things.
Reflection
We cannot understand everything, in fact in the grand scheme of things, we understand every little. This is so important to remember as a Christian and a parent of a new baby, things will be tough, confusing, and draining, but you’re not alone. The God of all of creation is with you and equipping you for this new adventure. While you may not be able to see how you will get past the sleepless nights or the potential trials you face, God can and He will guide you through. Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.
Reflection
In context, God is speaking about the prophecy of calling Jeremiah to be a prophet. While this verse is speaking to that, it also is speaking to us today, for we are all children of God, all called by Him, Matthew 28:18-20, 1 John 3:1. God has always known all of us before we were born, and it is true for this new baby. God is with this child and his hand over its life. It has been set apart, your duty as the guardian of this precious baby is to foster and grow that calling. Show this child what God’s love looks like through your words and actions, not just in the early days but all of your days.

It’s God’s good intention that our families be the center of our life, and build us up for other trials.
Bible Verses About Babies
11.
Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death.
Reflection
As if the preciousness of a baby isn’t apparent enough, we only need to remember that God Himself once took on the form of an innocent, humble baby. Made in the image of God, each child is valuable and important – because God would not have taken on the form of anything that wasn’t the most important of His creation.
12.
So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Reflection
The baby you love and care for is a direct image of God. God not only created this baby, but He also infused His image into this child, as well as you. This baby bears the image of Christ and this is a true testimony of God’s love for His creation.
13.
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.
Reflection
Children are a gift from God. They are pure innocence and filled with life and hope. I, Alexis, remember looking at my son while he was a newborn wondering who he would become, what he would be like. I felt the presence of God so deeply with both of my newborns. It is because they are a blessing, while it can be trying to be a parent, it is an incredible honor and the most impactful ministry I could ever do. I am endlessly blessed by my two miracles, I hope you too feel the blessing from God through your child(ren).
15.
The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Reflection
Remembering this verse is crucial for the success of any parent. There will be tough, scary, and long days. When in the midst of a sleep regression, temper tantrum, or even a diagnosis, remembering that God is not only with you and your child, but goes ahead of you. He is actually in the future. Living the truth of this Scripture can help bring peace and trust in times of uncertainty and difficulty that comes with any child.
19.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Reflection
Jesus’ invitation here is to take whatever burden you have and replace it with His way of life. This way of life is filled with joy, love, faithfulness, goodness, self-control, peace, patience, kindness, and gentleness. The journey of being a parent is an adventurous one, exciting and a bit scary. But you are not alone with this newborn baby. You have the King of kings with you to help you with anything and everything. Amen to that reality!
