The Top Christian Books For This Summer
Everybody Always by Bob Goff
“In his entertaining and inspiring follow-up to the New York Times bestselling phenomenon Love Does, Bob Goff takes readers on a journey into the secret of living without fear, constraint, or worry. The path toward the liberated existence we all long for is found in a truth as simple to say as it is hard to do: love people, even the difficult ones, without distinction and without limits.”
I bought this book right before my baby Lucy’s 3rd operation and unfortunately haven’t gotten the chance to read it yet. I intended to read it post surgery as Lucy recovered, but she had different plans and ended up having a hard time recovering from surgery. If you don’t know about my miracle baby, you can read her story here: Lucy’s Story. I am really excited to pick this book back up and learn from Goff on how to view people differently by loving them just as Jesus did.
Goliath Must Fall by Louie Giglio
“Fear. Rejection. Addiction. Anger. Comfort…Must Fall.
It’s likely you have a threatening giant in your life…an adversary or stronghold that’s diminishing your ability to live a full and free life. Frozen in the grip of rejection, fear, anger, comfort, or addiction, we lose sight of the promise God has for our lives. Demoralized and defeated, we settle for far less than his best.
God has a better plan for you, a plan for you to live in victory. That’s why he has silenced your giant once and for all.
In Goliath Must Fall, pastor Louie Giglio uncovers a newfound twist in the classic story of David and Goliath. The key to living free from our giants is not better slingshot accuracy, but keeping our eyes on the one and only giant-slayer—Jesus. Put your hope in him and watch Goliath fall.”
I love Louie and this book is phenomenal. I’ve heard him speak several times in person and followed him online for years. My husband, son, and I (and Lucy inside of me) were fortunate to visit his home church, Passion City Church, in Atlanta while evacuating from Hurricane Irma. If you struggle with fear, rejection, intimidation, this is the book for you. God has much to say to you in these pages. Much to say!
Liturgy Of The Ordinary: Sacred Practices In Everyday Life by Tish Harrison Warren
“In the overlooked moments and routines of our day, we can become aware of God’s presence in surprising ways. How do we embrace the sacred in the ordinary and the ordinary in the sacred?
Framed around one ordinary day, this book explores daily life through the lens of liturgy, small practices, and habits that form us. Each chapter looks at something―making the bed, brushing her teeth, losing her keys―that the author does every day. Drawing from the diversity of her life as a campus minister, Anglican priest, friend, wife, and mother, Tish Harrison Warren opens up a practical theology of the everyday. Each activity is related to a spiritual practice as well as an aspect of our Sunday worship.”
Christianity Today’s best book of 2018.
This is the epitome of what Brother Lawrence’s spiritual discipline Practicing the Presence looks like in 2018. See this discipline fleshed out in an ordinary day in an ordinary life. Exciting ways to connect to God in the mundaneness of life!
If you’re looking for ways to incorporate an awareness of God into your daily routine and find new ways to connect with Jesus in the midst of your crazy life, this book is a great resource for you!
Still Evangelical?: Insiders Reconsider Political, Social, and Theological Meaning Edited by Mark Labberton
“Evangelicalism in America has cracked, split on the shoals of the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath, leaving many wondering if they want to be in or out of the evangelical tribe. The contentiousness brought to the fore surrounds what it means to affirm and demonstrate evangelical Christian faith amidst the messy and polarized realities gripping our country and world. Who or what is defining the evangelical social and political vision? Is it the gospel or is it culture? For a movement that has been about the primacy of Christian faith, this is a crisis. This collection of essays was gathered by Mark Labberton, president of Fuller Theological Seminary, who provides an introduction to the volume. What follows is a diverse and provocative set of perspectives and reflections from evangelical insiders who wrestle with their responses to the question of what it means to be evangelical in light of their convictions. Contributors include:
- Shane Claiborne, Red Letter Christians
- Jim Daly, Focus on the Family
- Mark Galli, Christianity Today
- Lisa Sharon Harper, FreedomRoad.us
- Tom Lin, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship
- Karen Swallow Prior, Liberty University
- Soong-Chan Rah, North Park University
- Robert Chao Romero, UCLA
- Sandra Maria Van Opstal, Grace and Peace Community
- Allen Yeh, Biola University
- Mark Young, Denver Seminary
Referring to oneself as evangelical cannot be merely a congratulatory self-description. It must instead be a commitment and aspiration guided by the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ. What now are Christ’s followers called to do in response to this identity crisis?”
I am so excited about this book, I can’t wait to find time to read it. My seminary president Mark Young is a contributor and someone I personally know and respect. I am really looking forward to seeing what he and the others have to say about this hot-button topic.
